Houdini Mansion: A Stunning Edwardian Estate with a Mystical History

The Mansion is a four-bedroom mansion owned by music producer Rick Rubin in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles. Originally built in 1918, the house is famous for the successful bands who have recorded music there. The house was owned by Errol Flynn in the late 1930s. Although many say[1] that Harry Houdini lived at the mansion,[2] no one has ever lived in the Mansion under the name "Houdini". There is confusion between The Mansion, at 2451 Laurel Canyon Blvd. and The Houdini Estate, at 2400 Laurel Canyon Blvd.

After recording the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik with considerable ease and comfort, Rubin decided to use the mansion to record many of the albums he has produced, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium, Audioslave's Out of Exile, The Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium, Slipknot's Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), and Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight.

Houdini Mansion

Since 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have returned to the mansion on numerous occasions; the tracks "Fortune Faded" and "Save the Population" on 2003's Greatest Hits compilation, and more recently the group's 2006 album Stadium Arcadium were recorded there. The mansion can also be seen on the Chili Peppers' 1991 DVD Funky Monks, Linkin Park's DVD The Making of Minutes to Midnight, and in a series of eight clips uploaded to LCD Soundsystem's official YouTube channel documenting the creation of This Is Happening.

As of 2011 the site of the cottage was a vacant lot and up for sale.[3] The main mansion building itself was rebuilt after it was destroyed in the 1959 Laurel Canyon fire, and is now a historic venue called The Mansion.[6] While Houdini did not likely live at the "mansion," there is some probability that his widow did.[7]

Though it is rumored that the house has been haunted since 1918, when the son of a furniture store owner pushed his lover from the balcony,[11] the present mansion is actually built on the grounds of the old mansion, which burned down[12] in the late 1950s and wasn't rebuilt until years later to be used as a recording arts studio. Nevertheless, during the recording of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, more unusual things occurred. Consequently, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith chose to not live in the house during the recording, while guitarist John Frusciante considered the ghosts friendly.[13] The BSSM album art also features a photograph of a strange orb captured during a group photograph, which the band suggests might have been a spirit at the mansion.

Coming here, you will see a historic stately mansion with well-cared gardens able to host really lavish celebrations: more than 1,500 persons outdoors. It has on-site parking for 80 cars and up to 150 cars with a valet.

Here's a nice mysterious Halloween tale about Harry Houdini, who died on October 31, 1926: It's believed that Houdini and his wife Bess were living in Laurel Canyon in 1919 (while Houdini filmed for Famous Players-Lasky), but there's been a lot of confusion about the exact house. In 1959, the mansion at 2398 (now 2400) Laurel Canyon burnt down, and all the papers referred to the fire at the old Houdini mansion; however, that house actually belonged to Ralf Walker, a department store owner and friend of Houdini's. Houdini scholars are pretty sure that in 1919 the Houdinis actually stayed in the four-bedroom guesthouse at 2435 Laurel Canyon (across the street, on a knoll). There's no solid evidence for this, but there is lots of solid evidence that Bess lived at 2435 after Harry's death. According to the website Houdini's Ghost, the guesthouse "was built on solid rock and the hills around it were honeycombed with caves, some natural, some man-made. There was an elevator which took passengers down through the solid rock to a tunnel that went under Laurel Canyon Boulevard and came up in the gatehouse of the Walker mansion."

In 1935, Walker either died or sold the property, and Bess moved. According to Wild About Harry, "The property went through a series of renters, including evangelist Joe Jeffers, who turned the mansion into the Temple of Yahweh and required donations of up to $100,000 to live on the property." In 1959, both the main house and guesthouse burnt down and "All that remained was a smaller carriage house and the sprawling system of caves and stone walkways, which for the next few decades became home to hippies and homeless, including a mentally unstable man known as 'Robin Hood' who believed Laurel Canyon was Sherwood Forrest." Houdini-ists began to make pilgrimages to the ruins and some claimed to see/feel his ghost. (Houdini, incidentally, hated the occult; the famous seances his wife held were per an agreement they had that, if there was an afterlife, Houdini would get in touch.)

The stories go on to say that Bess Houdini, Harry's wife, held séances in the guest house across the street of the burnt down mansion. She did hold séances but not in any guest house on Laurel Canyon Boulevard. And, of course, local children propagated ghost stories about Houdini along with other tall tales. Besides the scandalous murder of the son's lover, there are also stories that before the mansion was burnt down, the location was used to hang bandits from the trees at the street intersection. Also according to local school children in the sixties and seventies, a crazy homeless man apparently resided in the area of the burnt down mansion. The crazy vagabond apparently thought he was Robin Hood and spoke in old English using Laurel Canyon as his Sherwood Forest. Lastly, Laurel Canyon Boulevard apparently hides a cave where the notorious bandit Tiburcio Vasquez hid all his gold, just waiting for intrepid teenagers to find! It's no wonder that with all the stories about the location, that Houdini obviously lived there too.

According to Dennis Hauck's Haunted Places, Houdini's mansion is located at 2398 Laurel Canyon Boulevard, near the intersection of Laurel Canyon Drive and Lookout Mountain Avenue. I've never been able to find it, and am usually stuck in such horrible traffic on that street, that I give up in frustration.

The address of 2398 Laurel Canyon is now 2400 Laurel Canyon, and a new Houdini House has been erected on the site, complete with pictures of the escapist himself hanging in the rooms. It's available to rent for functions, events, or just to stay in. Another location with rumors of Houdini is "The Mansion", a recording studio owned by Rick Rubin. Several different bands have used the mansion, and some have reported stories of hauntings on the property. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson, Jay-Z, Slipknot, Linkin Park and Maroon 5 are just some of the bands that have recorded at the location. The mansion was also used in the second season of the show: Californication. What's haunting the recording studio is a mystery.

Also, most of my fellow actors and writers that hung around Schwabs and Googies knew about the fake Houdini Mansion. But what the heck, Tinsel Town always printed the legend when it was better than the truth! Best, Steve

Sharmagne of Hollywood, CA on 2014-08-10 said: The "legendary" Houdini Mansion is located at 2400 Laurel Canyon Blvd. at the S.E. corner of Willow Glen and Laurel Canyon Blvd. After Houdini's death Bess lived across the street on the west side of Laurel Canyon, just north of Lookout Mountain. Today there are only 3 caissons or pillars left, the house having been destroyed during the Laurel Canyon fire. it is between the Tom Mix/Bessie Love Log Cabin/Frank Zappa's home and a house known as the Steinway Mansion, (because someone found 2 piano crates stamped "Steinway", in the basement), rumor has it that WC Fields once owned the mansion. My father used to visit 2400 Laurel Canyon before Fania Pearson inherited it from the man who owned it. ( Some sources say she bought it, but she was caretaker for the elderly man who bequeathed it to her.) After the fire, I used to visit Ron and Nan Batzdorf when they lived in the caretaker's/chauffeur's quarters above the garage, and they frequently allowed us into the burnt out house. I used to have a cloth panel removed from the living room of the mansion. The man who lived in the caves was John F. (I've lost his last name) He was in an insane asylum for murdering his grandmother at the dinner table when she intervened during a knife fight between John and his Grandfather. Instead of going to prison he was declared insane. Sometime later he was released as no longer a threat to society. The first thing he did was to go to the DMV and change his name to Robin Hood, purchase a cape and feathered hat. He then would go down to the Sunset Strip, pick up young women and bring them up to the acreage, where he was living in a cave, and attempt to rape them. I bought my home across the canyon, from his former wife Betty Hatton. Fania Pearson also owned the Log Cabin, the supposed Steinway mansion and a couple of other large homes in the canyon. The Log Cabin burned to the ground when her nephew was making PCP in the basement. The firefighters said it was the most difficult fire they had ever tried to put out. Every time they thought they had it contained, there would be a huge explosion and it would once again go up in flames. Well, ummm yeah, ether has the propensity to do that! Tom Mix's horse Tony was buried under the bowling alley in the Log Cabin. It is all gone now. In the late 80s early 90s there was a fire in the "Steinway Mansion, and my daughter's nanny and I pulled Fania out through a second story window onto a roof top when that home caught fire in the middle of the night. She had recently suffered a stroke and was unable to get out on her own. I have lived in the Canyon longer than I have lived anywhere else, and know most of the history and legends and know the difference. Robin Hood's son was banned from the Canyon and there was also an incident when Robin Hood's brother died of an OD, so these half wits took his corpse, Set it up on the railing at the Canyon Store, waited for the appropriate moment, then shoved it off into oncoming traffic in the middle of the night, hoping to be able to collect insurance, from the poor motorist who ran over the already dead man. Don't get me started on these stories...they are mind boggling! 2ff7e9595c
